Liguria journalists protest police information restrictions
Journalists in Liguria have organized a protest in front of the Prefecture in Genoa to denounce what they describe as a lack of transparency from law enforcement. Representatives from the Liguria Order of Journalists, the Ligurian Association of Journalists, and the Ligurian Reporters Group claim that police and certain prosecutors have withheld information regarding thefts, robberies, scams against the elderly, sexual violence, and stabbings.
Organizers state that authorities have justified the withholding of information by claiming that reporting such incidents would create “social alarm.” The protesters are also citing difficulties in accessing police stations and headquarters, as well as the failure to release the names of legal representatives for arrested or investigated individuals. The group is calling for the protection of Article 21 of the Italian Constitution to ensure adequate conditions for journalistic work and the public's right to know.
