Lika region commemorates Croatian War of Independence anniversaries

Commemorative events are being held in the Lika region to mark significant anniversaries related to the Croatian War of Independence.

In Otočac, a two-day scientific and professional symposium titled ‘Otočac, Brinje and Vrhovine in the Homeland War – Gacko Battlefield’ was held at the Gacko Public Open University. The event, organized by the Otočac branch of Matica hrvatska, brought together historians, scientists, and military commanders to discuss the role of the Gacko battlefield in the defense of Croatia. Discussions covered military operations from the start of the war through Operation Storm, as well as the impact on civilian populations and material losses in the Lika area.

In Gospić, ceremonies are marking the 34th anniversary of the formation of the 9th Guards Brigade ‘Vukovi’ and the 19th anniversary of its Motorized Battalion. The program includes a memorial mass at the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a wreath-laying ceremony at the brigade's memorial. The commemorations also feature a formal ceremony to present berets to new members of the Motorized Battalion, symbolizing the continuation of the unit's traditions.
