Lika waste disposal scandal sparks intellectual manifesto

A controversy regarding the illegal disposal of waste in the Lika region of Croatia has sparked significant public debate, involving accusations of criminal activity and political opportunism.

Luka Goleš Babić, founder of the Sapere Aude blog, and journalist Marina Vlahović have released a manifesto titled ‘Patriotic truths in an alienated world’. The document, signed by over fifty intellectuals, academics, and professionals, seeks to prevent the trivialization of the waste issue by mainstream media. The authors describe the mass disposal of toxic waste in parts of Croatia as a serious crime that should not be reduced to mere entertainment or political maneuvering.

Critics of the current discourse argue that the environmental crisis in Gospić is being used as a tool for political gain by various figures. While some view the sudden public outcry as a way to attack governing structures, others emphasize the severity of the ecological damage and the alleged link between criminal elements and politics.
