Ličke vode expands water testing to include radioactive elements

Ličke vode director Dario Radošević has announced that water testing in the Gospić area will be expanded to include radioactive elements. This decision follows the discovery of an illegal waste landfill and the subsequent need for extraordinary investigations into potential contamination.

To date, 73 analyses have been conducted as part of an emergency testing program ordered by the Ministry of Health and implemented by the Croatian Institute of Public Health. Radošević stated that all previous results indicate the water is health-compliant, with no traces of heavy metals or PFAS compounds detected.

The current testing protocols cover more than 180 parameters. The expansion to include radioactive elements is a precautionary measure because the exact composition of the waste at the illegal site is not yet fully known. Radošević noted that the utility relies on data from authorities such as the State Attorney's Office (DORH) and the Environmental Protection Fund to refine specific testing parameters.
