Lil Durk trial nears closing arguments after both sides rest

The federal murder-for-hire trial of Chicago rapper Lil Durk, born Durk Banks, has concluded its evidentiary phase. Both the prosecution and defense have rested their cases, with closing arguments expected to begin on September 8.

Prosecutors allege that Banks orchestrated a 2022 shooting near the Beverly Center in Los Angeles targeting rapper Quando Rondo in retaliation for the 2020 death of King Von. The attack resulted in the death of Rondo’s cousin, Saviay’a Robinson. The government’s case relies heavily on testimony from cooperating witnesses, including former assistant Kavon “OTF Vonnie” Grant and Kacey “OTF Jam” Hester, who claim Banks authorized the hit.

The defense has countered by questioning the credibility of these witnesses, arguing they are lying to secure lighter sentences. Defense attorneys have also pointed to inconsistencies in witness statements and suggested the true culprits acted independently. During the proceedings, U.S. District Judge Michael Fitzgerald referenced the historical murder of Thomas Becket to advise the jury on evaluating evidence and witness testimony.

Banks, who faces a possible life sentence, will not testify in his own defense. The trial has drawn significant attention due to the high profile of the defendants and the nature of the allegations.
