Lilian Higgins, who gave up her baby girl for adoption in 1976 under pressure from her own mother because the child was of mixed heritage, was reunited with her biological daughter, Heather Palmer, after nearly five decades. Palmer, born in September 1976, grew up in Oklahoma in a large adoptive family of twelve siblings. A DNA match through the commercial testing service 23andMe linked the two women, prompting Palmer to travel from Oklahoma to Louisiana where Higgins lives. The emotional meeting featured tears, embraces and remarks such as Higgins’s “It was one of the best moments of my life” and Palmer’s sense of an instant, familiar connection. Both women said they plan further visits and continued contact with each other’s families.
