Lilies identified as highly toxic to cats
Lilies are extremely dangerous to cats, as even small amounts can lead to fatal consequences. According to veterinarian Tina Hölscher from Aktion Tier, the entire plant is highly toxic, including the petals, stems, and even the water in a vase. Pollen is particularly hazardous because it can stick to a cat's face and be ingested during grooming.
Symptoms of poisoning can appear within hours and include vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, and increased salivation. If left untreated, the toxins can cause irreversible acute kidney failure and death within 24 to 72 hours. Owners are advised to seek immediate veterinary care for emergency treatment, such as infusions, to increase survival chances.
Other common plants that pose risks to cats include poinsettias, cyclamens, hellebores, and amaryllis. Poinsettias, in particular, can cause poisoning through their milky sap.
