Lille homeowners provide temporary housing for young migrants

In Lille, France, dozens of homeowners participated in a solidarity initiative this summer by offering their vacant properties to unaccompanied minor migrants. The program provided temporary, decent living conditions for 54 young migrants across approximately 20 different residences.

Among those helped were Zahirur and MD Jony, 16-year-old adolescents from Bangladesh who arrived in France in July. The teenagers expressed gratitude for the food, shelter, and assistance with laundry provided by their hosts. However, as the summer holidays conclude, the youths expressed anxiety regarding their future housing stability in the face of cold and rainy weather.

Local residents, such as Flore Lataste, described the initiative as a simple, cost-free way to build a solidarity network. Participants noted that the action serves as a community-led alternative to state-provided reception services.
