Lille marathon results in one death and dozens of hospitalizations

The return of the marathon in the Lille metropolitan area on Sunday, October 25, resulted in a fatal incident and numerous medical emergencies. While tens of thousands of athletes participated in the marathon and semi-marathon across ten municipalities, emergency services were heavily mobilized to manage the event.

Authorities reported that 270 participants required medical attention. While most cases involved minor injuries or exhaustion treated on-site, 35 individuals were transported to regional hospitals. The tragedy occurred following the semi-marathon, when a 35-year-old athlete collapsed after crossing the finish line. Despite immediate medical intervention and emergency transfer to a university hospital, the runner passed away that evening.

Additionally, one participant was injured during the morning after being struck by a falling tree near the fifth kilometer mark. Regarding public safety, the prefecture reported three arrests related to incidents of contempt against law enforcement and private security personnel.
