Lilly Wachowski criticizes Harry Potter fans over J. K. Rowling

Filmmaker Lilly Wachowski has criticized fans of the Harry Potter franchise, alleging that continued consumption of the brand supports J. K. Rowling’s opposition to transgender rights.

In an interview with Variety, the ‘Matrix’ co-director stated that Rowling is “funding trans genocide” through the revenue generated by her books and upcoming projects. Wachowski argued that because Rowling remains involved in the production of the new HBO Harry Potter television series, a portion of the money spent by fans on the franchise flows to the author, which Wachowski claims is used to fund anti-trans legislation globally.

The controversy follows long-standing criticism of Rowling’s public stances on gender identity. The upcoming HBO reboot has already faced pushback from various Hollywood figures and cast members regarding Rowling’s continued involvement in the production.
