Lim Lip Eng demands police explanation over flag controversy
Controversy has erupted in Malaysia following reports of the national flag, Jalur Gemilang, and the Perak state flag being displayed upside down at an MCA building in Ipoh. Social media users expressed significant dissatisfaction, questioning whether the error was intentional.
Kepong Member of Parliament Lim Lip Eng has called for an explanation from the Inspector-General of Police regarding perceived disparities in how flag-related offenses are handled. Lim highlighted a case in Kulai, Johor, where two citizens were detained and remanded for four days, whereas similar technical errors involving government agencies or political entities, such as the MCA Perak office or the Kuala Terengganu City Council, reportedly resulted in no arrests or only statements being recorded.
Lim criticized the potential for selective enforcement, suggesting that police actions might depend on the status of the individuals involved. He urged the police chief to provide clarity, stating that the authorities should not be lenient toward VIPs while being harsh toward ordinary citizens.
