Lim Tean faces new charges for allegedly fleeing to Malaysia

Singaporean lawyer and opposition politician Lim Tean, 61, faces three new charges related to an alleged attempt to evade a prison sentence by fleeing to Malaysia. The charges include failing to surrender to custody at the State Courts on August 3, leaving Singapore through the Tuas Checkpoint on August 4 without presenting a valid passport, and unlawfully entering Malaysia to evade imprisonment.

Lim was previously sentenced to three months and one week in prison for practicing law without a valid certificate. Following his failure to surrender in August, an arrest warrant was issued, and he was subsequently arrested by Malaysian police on August 6 before being transferred back to Singapore authorities.

During the court proceedings, which Lim attended via video link, prosecutors requested that he be denied bail upon the completion of his current sentence, citing ongoing investigations. The court granted this application. Lim faces additional existing charges, including criminal breach of trust, unlawful stalking, and refusing to answer an authorized public servant. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for October 23.
