Lima's Metropolitano launches modern air‑conditioned bus fleet
On June 18, 2026, Peru's Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) released a video showing the prototype of the next‑generation Metropolitano articulated buses for Lima and Callao.
The new units will include air conditioning, ergonomic seats, wider aisles, USB charging ports and a digital fare system that will accept the Interoperable Transport Card (TIT) and electronic wallets.
The renewal programme foresees roughly 600 vehicles – about 300 trunk buses, 60 for the northern extension and around 223 feeder buses – to support the network’s expansion north to Chimpu Ocllo in Carabayllo.
The rollout follows the ATU’s closure of operational observations and the submission of a structural addendum to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, which will set the official start date for the upgraded service.
