Lima evaluates transferring Caltrain railway cars to Puno and Tacna
Lima Mayor Renzo Reggiardo is evaluating the possibility of transferring a portion of the approximately 100 donated railway cars from the U.S. company Caltrain to the southern Peruvian regions of Puno and Tacna.
The cars, which are described as being in excellent condition with stainless steel construction, air conditioning, and restrooms, were originally donated for use within the Lima Metropolitan area. To facilitate the transfer to the south, officials may need to negotiate an amendment to the original donation agreement with Caltrain.
Preliminary discussions have already begun with the regional governors of Puno and Tacna. In Tacna, the request follows an official communication from the regional governor seeking to modernize the Tacna-Arica railway infrastructure, for which a technical file has already been authorized.
