Lima experiences heatwave with temperatures reaching 30 °C

Lima is experiencing unusually high temperatures for the winter season, driven by conditions associated with the El Niño Costero phenomenon. The National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology of Peru (Senamhi) reported that the district of Carabayllo reached a thermal sensation of 30 °C on September 8, with an ambient temperature of 28 °C.

Other districts also recorded elevated temperatures, including Ate (27 °C), La Molina (27 °C), and San Juan de Lurigancho (26 °C). On September 7, the Jesús María station recorded a historic maximum of 26.7 °C, a value not seen during a winter season since the extraordinary El Niño events of 1982/1983 and 1997/1998. This temperature was 8.5 °C above the seasonal average.

Senamhi noted that this heatwave has resulted in 97 consecutive warm days. Due to the persistent heat and intense solar radiation, authorities have recommended that the population use sun protection, such as wide-brimmed hats, umbrellas, sunglasses, long-sleeved clothing, and sunscreen.
