Lima Mayor seeks security firearms as Moquegua protests rise

In Lima, Mayor Renzo Reggiardo has formally requested the central government to expedite the authorization of firearms for security personnel at the Municipal Company for Support of Strategic Projects (Emape). The request aims to protect workers and infrastructure projects from increasing extortion and criminal attacks by organized gangs.

Reggiardo stated that the municipal administration has met all technical and legal requirements through Sucamec and emphasized that this measure is intended to complement, rather than replace, the duties of the National Police of Peru. He urged the executive branch to avoid bureaucratic delays to safeguard municipal assets and public works.

In Moquegua, the Agrarian and Environmental Federation (FACAREMOQ) has demanded an urgent meeting with the Provincial Municipality of Mariscal Nieto regarding the Huatipuka project. The project, proposed by Tower and Tower S.A., involves a solid waste treatment plant and a security landfill.

Local farmers and social organizations have rejected the initiative, leading to legal disputes and the revocation of certain licenses. FACAREMOQ is seeking transparency regarding the municipality's legal actions and has warned of potential protests if the current status of the project is not clarified.
