Lima mayoral candidates cleared of election challenges

The Special Electoral Jury of Central Lima has cleared four major candidates to remain in the race for the Lima mayoralty ahead of the regional and municipal elections on October 4. The ruling allows Rafael López Aliaga (Renovación Popular), Francis Allison (Avanza País), Carlos Bruce (Somos Perú), and Daniel Urresti (Podemos Perú) to continue their campaigns.

Electoral authorities dismissed challenges against López Aliaga and Allison because the objections were filed after the legal deadline. The challenge against Urresti was rejected following a Constitutional Court decision that annulled a previous prison sentence, removing legal barriers to his candidacy. Regarding Carlos Bruce, the jury ruled that completing candidate resume forms before the formal signing of party acts does not violate internal democracy rules, though an appeal regarding this matter will be heard by the National Jury of Elections on August 18.

In related political developments, a Datum International poll indicates that 60% of respondents believe Luis Rubio resigned from his mayoral candidacy for Renovación Popular specifically to allow Rafael López Aliaga to lead the municipal list. Following Rubio's departure, López Aliaga has risen to 16% in voter intention polls, leading the field ahead of Carlos Bruce at 13%.
