Samuel Daza files JNE complaint against Rafael López Aliaga

During a municipal debate for the Lima Mayoralty, tensions escalated between Fuerza Popular candidate Samuel Daza and Renovación Popular leader Rafael López Aliaga. Daza filed a formal complaint with the Jurado Nacional de Elecciones (JNE) Tribunal de Honor, accusing López Aliaga of political coercion and intimidation. Daza claims that López Aliaga sent WhatsApp messages prior to the debate intended to pressure him into not criticizing the Renovación Popular party or its candidates.

The confrontation was fueled by an investigation revealing that Renovación Popular has 110 candidates with criminal convictions, including charges for homicide, sexual assault, and drug trafficking. In response to these findings, López Aliaga stated that the JNE had certified the candidates as having no records and announced he would suspend the party affiliation of the 110 individuals involved.

Additionally, Daza accused López Aliaga of using racist and classist language, specifically after being referred to as a 'piraña,' a term Daza argues targets residents of Lima's outskirts. The debate also saw various candidates, including Mónica Yaya and Francis Allison, challenge López Aliaga on issues of public security and municipal management.
