Peru intensifies preparations for 2026 regional and municipal elections

Preparations for Peru's 2026 regional and municipal elections are intensifying across various sectors. The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) has approved new directives for processing electoral records to ensure accurate results for the October 4 elections. Additionally, ONPE has launched training sessions for poll workers in provinces such as Chincha, Pisco, and San Román to prepare them for voting, casting, and scrutiny procedures.

Political activity is also ramping up. In Lima, the National Jury of Elections (JNE) organized the first municipal debate, where 13 candidates presented platforms focusing on security, transport, and infrastructure. Candidate Daniel Urresti proposed hiring specialized security teams to combat crime, while César Pérez led voting simulations in Callao, showing strong polling numbers. In Cusco, 13 candidacies have been registered, with candidates prioritizing health, water, and security.

Legal and administrative updates include the JNE ratifying that former mayors are eligible to run for first councilor positions. Meanwhile, in Callao, Reniec has begun the census process for a potential public consultation regarding the creation of the Pachacútec district.
