Lima seeks to strengthen regional aviation hub status
Peruvian authorities, including the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) and the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC), are participating in Routes World 2026 in Frankfurt, Germany. The delegation aims to meet with representatives from 26 international airlines and airports to promote new routes, increase flight frequencies, and expand the country's aerial connectivity.
Despite these promotional efforts, concerns have been raised regarding Lima's competitiveness as an international connection hub. Critics point to the international transfer tax (TUA) as a significant obstacle that increases costs for connecting passengers, potentially favoring regional competitors like Panama.
Additionally, the recent expansion of the Jorge Chávez International Airport terminal reflects Peru's strategic push to solidify its position as a regional hub, even amidst domestic political instability.
