Lima tests bidirectional exclusive bus lane pilot

The Urban Transport Authority for Lima and Callao (ATU) has launched a 30-day pilot program to test a bidirectional exclusive bus lane in Lima. The trial covers a 1.5-kilometer stretch of Garcilaso de la Vega and Arequipa avenues, specifically between 9 de Diciembre Avenue and Emilio Fernández Street.

Under this new scheme, Corredor Azul buses operate in both directions using a single exclusive roadway that previously only served traffic heading toward central Lima. The adjacent roadway is reserved for private vehicles traveling toward Miraflores. This separation aims to reduce congestion and improve the commercial speed and regularity of the service.

The ATU expects the measure to benefit more than 70,000 daily passengers. During the trial period, authorities will monitor travel times, safety, traffic behavior, and general functionality to determine whether to maintain, modify, or expand the system to other sections of Arequipa Avenue.
