Lima implements bidirectional bus lane on Avenida Arequipa

The Urban Transport Authority for Lima and Callao (ATU) has launched a pilot plan for a bidirectional bus lane on Avenida Arequipa. The project, spanning 1.5 kilometers between Avenida 9 de Diciembre and Calle Emilio Fernández, is designed to prioritize the Corredor Azul, benefiting approximately 70,000 daily users by improving transit speed and order.

Private vehicles traveling toward central Lima must use alternative routes, such as Avenida Petit Thouars, Paseo de la República, or Salaverry. To mitigate local impact, the ATU has introduced a special pass known as 'Vehículo Autorizado con Permiso de Paso' (VAPP) for residents and businesses requiring access to the restricted zone.

The implementation has faced immediate challenges, including confrontations between a group of taxi drivers and the National Police near Parque de las Aguas. Protesters reportedly threw stones and sticks while attempting to enter the lane reserved for buses.

Additionally, the ATU has issued safety guidelines for commuters regarding seismic activity on public transport, advising passengers on the Metro de Lima and Metropolitano to remain calm and follow staff instructions during earthquakes.
