Blijf in Beeld campaign promotes smartphone safety discussions

The Dutch government has launched a new phase of the ‘Blijf in Beeld’ campaign to encourage parents to discuss smartphone use with their children. Led by State Secretary Aerdts, the initiative aims to foster open communication regarding the risks of digital life, such as online bullying, addiction, and exposure to shocking content.

Research indicates that children receive smartphones at an average age of 10. Furthermore, approximately half of children aged 10 to 15 report seeing online messages that make them feel scared or sad, yet many do not share these experiences with parents due to shame or fear of negative reactions. The campaign provides practical advice for parents, such as choosing neutral moments for discussion, sharing personal experiences, and focusing on the positive aspects of technology to build trust.
