Canada and Ireland report rising transportation fatalities

Canada and Ireland are reporting significant increases in transportation-related fatalities. In British Columbia, the BC Coroners Service reported 13 unintentional train-related deaths in the first eight months of 2026, more than double the six deaths recorded during the same period last year. Transportation and Transit Minister Mike Farnworth emphasized that rail safety is a communal responsibility. This trend mirrors a national increase in Canada, where 42 train-related deaths had been recorded by the end of July.

In Ireland, a series of fatal road accidents occurred on Sunday, September 20. Four people died in separate incidents across Co Meath, Co Limerick, Co Wexford, and Co Waterford. The fatalities included a man in his 60s who died in a car and bus collision on the N25 near Piltown, a motorcyclist in Co Wexford, a man in his 20s in Co Limerick, and a man in his 50s in Co Meath. Total road deaths in Ireland for 2026 have reached 138, an 11% increase compared to the same period last year.
