Liminka–Oulu double track railway project to begin

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency has announced the commencement of the Liminka–Oulu double track project. The initiative involves constructing approximately 25 kilometers of new track to upgrade the current single-track section between Liminka and Oulu.

Preparatory work, including soil studies and land acquisitions, is scheduled to begin in the autumn of 2026. Major construction is expected to start toward the end of 2026, beginning with the renewal of the Oulunlahti overpass on Lentokentäntie to accommodate the additional track. Broader construction activities, including the building of the Ketolanperäntie underpass and earthworks, are slated for 2027.

Once completed, the double track will significantly increase capacity and allow for better coordination between passenger and freight traffic. The project aims to increase train speeds to 200 km/h and raise axle loads to 250 kN. The development will also include the installation of noise barriers and vibration-reducing pile slabs.
