Limón faces government tour and social media controversy

The Costa Rican government has announced a two-day tour of the Caribbean region scheduled for August 31 and September 1. The itinerary includes visits to Limón, Talamanca, Guácimo, and Pococí to inaugurate infrastructure projects in energy, health, education, and security. Key events include the announcement of the Moín IV thermal plant, the inauguration of the Sixaola International Market, and the delivery of roadworks in Guácimo.

Simultaneously, a social media controversy has emerged regarding the upcoming Grand Gala Parade, which celebrates Afro-Costa Rican Culture Day. A Facebook post from the page ‘Limón-cédula siete’ sparked backlash by stating that the celebration should exclude white individuals.

Several prominent figures from Limón, including former footballer Atim Roper, singer Gimario, and journalist Jason Ureña, have publicly distanced themselves from the post. They argued that the message promotes division and contradicts the goal of fighting racism, asserting that the celebration of Afro-descendant culture should be inclusive of all who appreciate it.
