Limoges Town Hall arson: two suspects arrested

Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the arson attack on the Limoges Town Hall, which occurred during civil unrest in France on October 17, 2026. The historic 19th-century building, a protected monument, suffered extensive damage, including the collapse of its roof and 43-meter clock tower.

The first suspect, a 34-year-old man with ties to far-left groups and a known 'S' file entry, was apprehended in Val d'Issoire. Originally charged with organized destruction of property, prosecutors have upgraded the charges to include attempted murder of public officials, as 13 municipal police officers were inside the building during the fire.

A second suspect, a 66-year-old man, was arrested in the Creuse department with the assistance of the RAID elite police unit. He faces charges of organized destruction of property using dangerous means.

The investigation follows widespread protests against the cost of living that turned violent across France. Local officials have pointed to radicalized elements in the Millevaches plateau region as potential sources of organized unrest.
