Limoges Town Hall fire symbolizes deepening social unrest in France
A fire that destroyed the 19th-century Limoges town hall has become a symbol of escalating social unrest across France. The blaze caused the building's wooden clock tower to collapse, an event Mayor Guillaume Guérin described as a “historical tragedy for France.”
Two suspects, aged 34 and 66, have been arrested. Prosecutors have linked the individuals to radical-left networks. The incident follows weeks of nationwide demonstrations that initially focused on the state of high schools but have expanded to include grievances regarding the cost of living and a significant fiscal deficit.
In response to the violence, authorities have imposed an overnight curfew and limited public gatherings to ten people in the Limoges city center. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu visited the site, while police presence is being increased in several cities to prevent further escalation ahead of the upcoming presidential election.
