Lin Kuo-chang faces political scrutiny amid legal support rally

The political campaign for the Yilan County magistrate position has intensified as opposing factions clash over the background and professional record of candidate Lin Kuo-chang.

Members of the Kuomintang (KMT) held a press conference to challenge Lin’s image as a “political novice” and a public interest lawyer. KMT legislators Wang Hung-wei and Lin Pei-hsiang questioned his suitability for office, alleging that his legal career involved defending individuals accused of serious crimes, including fraud, sexual assault, corruption, and murder. They argued that his past defense work for such defendants contradicts the integrity required of a public official.

In response, Lin Kuo-chang has mobilized significant support from the legal community. A “Lawyers Supporting Lin Kuo-chang” group recently held a rally, drawing nearly 200 legal professionals from across the country. Supporters, including various bar association leaders, emphasized his long-term commitment to legal aid and community service. Lin stated that he intends to use his legal expertise and professional values to serve the people of Yilan, dismissing political attacks as attempts to smear his reputation.
