Lin settlement identified as Europe's oldest pile dwelling site

Archaeologists from Albania and Switzerland have identified what is believed to be the oldest documented pile dwelling settlement in Europe. Located on the shores of Lake Ohrid in the Lin and Buqeza areas, the site dates back to between 8000 and 4000 BCE.

Research conducted by the University of Bern and Albanian specialists involves intensive land and underwater excavations. Key findings include a well-preserved wooden protective fence submerged in the water, which indicates early community organization and defensive structures. Professor Albert Hafner described the Lin area as one of the best-preserved sites in Europe, offering significant insights into the beginnings of continental civilization.

The project, supported by Switzerland, highlights international scientific cooperation. Swiss Ambassador to Albania, Ruth Huber, visited the site to emphasize the importance of the initiative for both science and bilateral development.
