Lina Mendoni inaugurates restored historic sites on Amorgos

Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni visited the island of Amorgos to open two restored monuments within the medieval Castle of the Town. The projects – the historic “Tholos” building and the 15th‑century water‑tank known as the “Kato Lakkos” – were rebuilt by the municipality as part of a broader programme to revive the island’s Byzantine settlement.

The Tholos, a former wool‑processing facility, will serve as a cultural venue for exhibitions and as an information centre on traditional island occupations that are disappearing. The Kato Lakkos, a rare vaulted cistern from the Venetian era, is now accessible to visitors as a protected historic monument. Mendoni praised the cooperation between the Ministry of Culture and the Amorgos municipal council and highlighted the unique environmental, geological and climatic conditions of the Cyclades that have shaped a distinctive local culture from antiquity to the present.
