Linares celebrates 60 years of National Tarantas Contest

The LX Concurso Nacional de Tarantas ‘Ciudad de Linares’ has concluded its competitive sessions, with Enrique Ángel García winning first prize in the Cantes Libres category. Antonio Fuentes Melero and José Muñoz Espinar secured second and third place, respectively. The event featured a performance by guest dancer Pastora Galván.

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the competition, an exhibition titled ‘60 años del Concurso Nacional de Tarantas en el Archivo Histórico de la Ciudad de Linares’ is being held at Paseo de Linarejos. Curated by José Ramón Checa and Francisco Aránega, the display includes 20 panels and 88 historical documents, such as correspondence, voting records, and posters, tracing the contest's history since its official inception in 1964.

The competition maintains a deep connection to the region's mining heritage, as the taranta is a traditional mining song. Linares Mayor Auxi del Olmo emphasized that the genre represents the identity and memory of the local people and their history of labor and sacrifice.
