Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Fenced and Set for July 4 Repairs After Algae Bloom and Paint Damage
President Donald Trump’s $14‑16 million renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, intended to coat the basin in an “American flag blue” sealant, quickly ran into problems. Within days of completion the water turned green with algae and the new paint began to peel. Trump has blamed “vandals” for a alleged 350‑foot slash in the coating and for the algae, but officials have provided no evidence. The Department of the Interior confirmed that five people have been arrested and five others cited for vandalism, including former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, who denies wrongdoing. In response, the Interior Department and U.S. Park Police have installed chain‑link fencing around the pool and deployed National Guard patrols. Trump announced that the pool will be drained again for “permanent repair” around the Fourth of July, with plans to replace grass and address the damaged areas. The contracts for the work were awarded without competitive bidding to Atlantic Industrial Coatings and Greenwater Services. The controversy has sparked widespread media coverage and political debate over the project’s cost, oversight and the president’s claims.
