Reflecting Pool damage confirmed: liner cut and fence posts thrown into water

A court filing by the National Park Service (NPS) disclosed that the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool’s new liner was cut with a sharp knife or razor on June 9, 2026, shortly after a $16 million rehabilitation was largely completed. Deputy director Frank Lands said the cut damaged a caulk layer over foam sealant and that about 70 fence‑post caps were thrown into the basin.

U.S. Park Police responded to the report, and seven arrests, seven federal citations and 18 police reports have been filed in connection with the alleged vandalism. President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed a “300‑foot‑long gash” caused by vandals and accused unknown individuals of using knives or box cutters, but no evidence has been provided.

Experts and commentators have debated other possible causes, including damage from Trump’s convoy driving over the still‑dry pool in May and potential material or installation failures. Democrats have called for an investigation into the $16 million contracts awarded without competition, questioning whether the expedited work contributed to the algae bloom and coating failures.

The NPS plans to drain the pool again after Independence Day celebrations to assess and repair the liner and related damage.
