Lindsay Clancy murder trial: Defense rests on postpartum psychosis claim

The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, accused of killing her three children in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023, has reached a critical stage as the defense rests its case. Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, does not dispute that she strangled her children—Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months—but her legal team argues she is not criminally responsible due to severe postpartum psychosis.

During the trial, the defense called 10 witnesses, including forensic psychiatrist Dr. Phillip Resnick, who testified that Clancy was clearly psychotic and not in control of her actions at the time of the killings. Other testimony included statements from a hospital chaplain, Sheila Cavanaugh, who reported that Clancy claimed to hear a male voice commanding her to act to ensure her children's safety. The defense also highlighted Clancy's history of seeking psychiatric help and her use of various medications.

Prosecutors, however, contend that the killings were planned and meticulous. They have questioned the sincerity of Clancy's suicide attempt and noted her inconsistent use of prescribed medications. The trial has also drawn significant public attention, including large gatherings of supporters outside the Plymouth Superior Court wearing pink to advocate for mental health awareness and solidarity with Clancy.
