Lindsay Clancy murder trial focuses on postpartum psychosis defense

The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy in Plymouth, Massachusetts, has entered a critical phase as the defense presents evidence regarding her mental state. Clancy, who admitted to killing her three children—Cora, Dawson, and Callan—in January 2023, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Her legal team argues she was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and was overmedicated by various providers.

Family members, including her mother Paula Musgrove and sister Allison Ozga, testified to a significant decline in Clancy’s mental health starting in late 2022. Witnesses described her as becoming increasingly anxious, paranoid, and suicidal. Musgrove testified that Clancy had expressed thoughts of harming her children in December 2022 and believed her prescribed medications were “destroying her mind.”

Former mother-in-law Susan Clancy also testified, stating that Clancy had been “begging for help” and struggling with insomnia and anxiety in the months preceding the tragedy. Additionally, forensic psychologist Dr. Paul Zeizel testified that Clancy reported hearing a “male voice” that commanded her to kill her children and herself. While prosecutors maintain the killings were a calculated and intentional act, the defense continues to focus on the medical emergency of postpartum psychosis as the central factor in the case.
