Lindsay Clancy trial focuses on postpartum mental health testimony
The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, accused of killing her three children in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023, has entered a phase focusing on her mental health and medical treatment. Testimony from psychiatric nurse practitioner Rebecca Jollotta detailed Clancy’s struggles with anxiety, depression, and insomnia during late 2022.
Jollotta testified that Clancy frequently requested changes to her medications, reporting side effects such as intrusive thoughts, numbness, and insomnia. While Jollotta attributed these symptoms to postpartum depression, the defense argues that Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder, rendering her not criminally responsible for the deaths of Cora, Dawson, and Callan.
Prosecutors maintain that Clancy acted intentionally and rationally. They have also highlighted her attempts to manipulate treatment plans. The trial has drawn significant national attention to the complexities of postpartum mental health and the adequacy of psychiatric care for new mothers.
