Lindsay Clancy trial begins in Massachusetts murder case of three children
A jury in Plymouth Superior Court was seated on Monday as the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy opened. Clancy, a former labor‑and‑delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, is charged with three counts of first‑degree murder and three counts of strangulation for the deaths of her three children—Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and infant Callan, 8 months—who were killed on Jan. 24 2023 in their Duxbury home. Prosecutors say she deliberately and meticulously strangled the children with exercise‑resistance bands, then cut herself and jumped from a second‑story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.
The defense, led by attorney Kevin Reddington, argues Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a rare severe psychiatric condition, and therefore lacked criminal responsibility. Prosecutor Shanan Buckingham contends the killings were pre‑meditated, noting that Clancy sent her husband Patrick on an errand to give herself time to act. The trial, expected to run six to eight weeks, will feature testimony from Patrick Clancy and other witnesses, and the jury (12 women and 6 men) will decide whether she acted with intent or under a mental‑health crisis.
