Lindsey Vonn says ankle still broken while returning to ESPY red carpet

Alpine ski legend Lindsey Vonn suffered a severe crash in the women’s downhill at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo on 8 February. The accident caused a complex fracture of her left tibia, a torn anterior cruciate ligament, compartment syndrome and required multiple emergency surgeries. After five months of intensive rehab – including long periods in a wheelchair and on crutches – Vonn appeared at the 2026 ESPY Awards in New York. On the red carpet she presented an award and spoke openly about her recovery, saying, “It’s been a very slow process,” and confirming that “my ankle is still broken” and that walking remains “very hard.” She described the emotional moment when she could walk unaided again after months of dependence on assistance. Vonn also highlighted the mental aspect of her rehab, noting that “psychological endurance is currently my biggest ally.” She wore a sequined one‑sleeve Gucci gown while continuing physiotherapy exercises such as medical‑ball squats to rebuild strength.
