U.S. Olympic ski champion Lindsey Vonn, 41, still faces a broken ankle five months after her severe crash on the Olympic downhill in Cortina d’Ampezzo on 8 February 2026. The accident caused a complex tibial head fracture, compartment syndrome, a broken ankle and aggravated a previously torn ACL. Vonn spent weeks in a wheelchair, relied on crutches and was airlifted to hospital. In a July interview she said, “Walking is still very difficult. My ankle is still broken,” and expressed that returning to the gym and standing on her own feet was an emotional milestone.

Later that month Vonn attended the TIME100 Sports gala in a striking red dress, thanking the organizers for her inclusion on the list and praising sport’s power to unite and inspire. She noted, “It has taken five months, but now I am finally here,” and emphasized her determination to regain strength both mentally and physically.
