Lineage Logistics faces backlash over permit to rebuild Boyle Heights cold‑storage warehouse
A June fire destroyed a 491,000‑square‑foot cold‑storage warehouse in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, leaving tons of rotting food, foul odors, flies and rats. Lineage Logistics announced that nearly half of the food waste has been cleared, sealed in deodorized containers and moved offsite, while cleanup of the remaining structure continues. Los Angeles County health officials issued an administrative citation fine of $500 per day for unsanitary conditions and have ordered the removal of all fire‑damaged organic material.
Lineage filed a permit application with the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety to rebuild the warehouse to its pre‑fire condition. The company says the permit is a normal repair step that will not distract from cleanup and stresses that cold‑storage facilities are critical infrastructure for the region. Mayor Karen Bass described the filing as “a slap in the face” to affected families, and Councilmember Ysabel Jurado called rebuilding “outrageous” while residents still endure odor and pest problems. Lineage has also been fined by the county health department and the South Coast Air Quality Management District for ongoing odor complaints.
