Lineage Logistics faces legal threats over Boyle Heights food waste cleanup

A dispute has emerged between Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Lineage Logistics regarding the cleanup deadline for a fire-damaged food-storage warehouse in Boyle Heights. Following a June 17 fire, approximately 85 million pounds of meat and seafood were left to rot, causing severe odors and sanitation concerns for local residents and businesses.

Mayor Bass has accused the multibillion-dollar company of failing to meet a 45-day deadline set to conclude on August 14. She has called for city lawyers to pursue civil litigation, penalties, and a property lien to ensure accountability. The Mayor described the situation as a “nightmare” for families dealing with horrific smells and uncertainty.

Lineage Logistics disputes the timeline, stating the 45-day cleanup clock only began on July 7, when the Los Angeles Fire Department ended its 24-hour fire watch. The company maintains it is working in good faith and has already removed a significant portion of the bulk food waste. Meanwhile, local businesses report declining customer traffic due to the stench and an increase in flies, while health officials have issued citations and daily fines for unsanitary conditions.
