Lingen (Ems) adopts green hydrogen roadmap after Fraunhofer ISI study
A new study by Fraunhofer ISI in Leipzig provides a strategic blueprint for green hydrogen development in Lingen (Ems) and the wider Emsland region. The city, together with the Emsland district, has already installed electrolyzers at the RWE‑Gaskraftwerk Emsland and at bp facilities, creating the basis for large‑scale production of renewable hydrogen. The report recommends linking the excess heat from electrolysis to district heating for households and businesses, and deploying hydrogen‑capable gas turbines to generate electricity during periods of low solar and wind output.
The study also highlights the importance of digital solutions from the city‑initiated IT‑Campus Lingen & KI Park, the regional H2‑Region Emsland network, and partnerships with local firms such as Krone, Bücker & Essing and the University of Osnabrück to expand synthetic fuel and alternative‑drive research. These measures aim to position Lingen as a leading hub for smart energy systems and to strengthen the regional economy through advanced hydrogen technologies.
