Lingen nuclear fuel project faces legal challenge over Russian cooperation
The environmental organization BUND Niedersachsen is expanding its legal challenge against a nuclear fuel project in Lingen, Germany. The group is filing an urgent motion to ensure that its existing lawsuit maintains a suspensive effect, preventing the immediate implementation of permits for the facility.
Advanced Nuclear Fuels (ANF) Lingen, a subsidiary of the French state-owned company Framatome, intends to manufacture specialized VVER/WWER fuel elements. These components are designed for use in Russian-style nuclear reactors located in Eastern Europe. The production process is expected to involve cooperation with TVEL, a subsidiary of the Russian state corporation Rosatom.
Despite warnings from intelligence officials regarding the risks of confrontation with Russia, the German Federal Chancellery has stated it maintains no security concerns regarding the project. This stance follows inquiries from Lower Saxony's Environment Minister, Christian Meyer, who sought to determine if recent geopolitical tensions justified halting the expansion. The legal proceedings will determine whether the operator can begin production immediately or must wait until the main court case is resolved.
