Lingua Franca cashmere label shifts from political slogans to broader fashion focus

Rachelle Hruska founded the New York‑based cashmere label Lingua Franca in 2016. The brand quickly became known for hand‑stitched sweaters featuring progressive slogans such as “melt ICE” and “impeach him,” a line dubbed “Give a Damn.” High‑profile celebrities—including Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart, Jane Fonda and Connie Britton—have been photographed wearing the pieces, giving the company extensive media attention.

While the political messaging sparked both praise and backlash, Lingua Franca has expanded its product range and toned down overt political statements. The label now offers ready‑to‑wear collections, operates a 10,000‑square‑foot workshop in Manhattan’s Garment District, and generates most of its revenue from customizable cashmere pullovers. Hruska, who turned to sewing during a postpartum depression episode, says the brand still emphasizes high‑quality materials, fair labor practices and charitable contributions, having donated close to two million dollars to various causes.
