LinkedIn expands profile verification through peer confirmation
LinkedIn is expanding its profile verification capabilities to combat fake profiles and fraudulent credentials, particularly those generated by AI. The platform is introducing a peer-verification mechanism where colleagues or former classmates can confirm a user's professional roles and educational history.
This new system allows verified members to act as guarantors for others. When a sufficient number of confirmations are received, a verification badge is assigned to the profile. Users retain the option to hide this badge if they choose. LinkedIn reports that verified profiles see significantly higher engagement, averaging 50% more views and 90% more impressions on publications.
Oscar Rodriguez, LinkedIn's Vice President of Product, stated that “authenticity will be the most precious currency on the internet.” To date, LinkedIn’s verification tools have been used by over 115 million members and 700,000 companies.
