LinkedIn job recruitment scams target users with malicious software

A sophisticated new wave of job recruitment scams is targeting job seekers, particularly on platforms like LinkedIn. Fraudsters are using highly realistic methods to deceive candidates, leading to significant financial losses, including one reported case where a victim lost £18,000 in cryptocurrency.

The scam typically begins when a fake recruiter contacts a candidate via LinkedIn and conducts a legitimate-looking video interview. Candidates are then instructed to complete a technical assessment using documents, such as Google Sheets, which contain embedded malicious software. In some instances, scammers also distribute fraudulent mobile applications, such as fake versions of ‘Indeed Interview’ or ‘MyInterview’, to compromise devices.

Cybersecurity experts note that the process is difficult to detect because it utilizes legitimate platforms and software that appear to have valid digital signatures. LinkedIn has acknowledged the scale of the issue as these tactics become increasingly advanced.
