Stockholm student rents hit 8,516 SEK, covering 63% of study grant

A recent survey of 4,138 student‑housing ads collected in June 2026 shows that a one‑room rental in Stockholm costs an average of 8,516 SEK per month, which is 63 % of the full study grant of 13,592 SEK. The typical student apartment is 21.6 m², with a price of 431 SEK per square metre, more than double that of cheaper cities.

Lund follows with an average rent of 7,063 SEK, Göteborg 6,998 SEK and Uppsala 6,974 SEK, all still taking over half of a student’s grant. Umeå is the most affordable at 5,411 SEK (40 % of the grant), while Eskilstuna, Borås and Norrköping offer the lowest per‑square‑metre prices.

Rent growth remains strong: Lund’s per‑square‑metre price rose 13.3 % over the previous year, Gävle 12.1 % and Halmstad 10.5 %. Eskilstuna saw a 3.9 % decline. Housing‑market analyst Ola Söderlind advises students to compare listings, secure insurance and verify electricity contracts to avoid surprises.
