Western Canada and U.S. wildfires trigger mass evacuations
Massive wildfires are causing widespread destruction and displacement across Western Canada and the Western United States. In British Columbia, a state of emergency has been declared as approximately 380 wildfires burn, with 150 currently out of control. The Bald Range wildfire in the Okanagan region has grown to an estimated 13,618 hectares, forcing more than 20,000 people to evacuate from communities such as Summerland and Peachland. The fire's intensity is described as "explosive," with officials noting it has created its own weather system that generates lightning.
In Canada, wildfires have already scorched roughly 4 million hectares this year. Saskatchewan has also declared a province-wide state of emergency following multiple active fires.
In the United States, over 30,000 emergency personnel are battling 94 large wildfires. In Utah, the Widemouth 2 fire in Fishlake National Forest has been a site of tragedy, where two pilots died in a helicopter crash. Other significant fires include the Babylon Fire and the Rocky Canyon Fire. In Oregon, approximately 10,508 personnel are assigned to 32 large fires, including the Wrights Spring Fire. The extreme fire behavior is being driven by prolonged drought and abnormally warm, dry winters.
