Linux 7.4 to enable HDMI 2.1 and FreeSync by default for AMD

A pull request submitted to the Linux DRM-Next stack aims to enable HDMI 2.1 features by default for AMD graphics users in the upcoming Linux 7.4 kernel. This update includes support for AMD FreeSync, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and Auto Low-Latency Mode (ALLM).

A key component of this change is the activation of Fixed Rate Link (FRL), which is essential for high-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 transmissions. While FRL was integrated into the AMDGPU driver in Linux 7.2, it remained disabled by default to ensure stability. Enabling it now will allow for higher resolutions and frame rates without requiring manual workarounds.

The development follows previous challenges with the HDMI Forum, which had reportedly declined to provide licenses for open-source Linux drivers due to concerns regarding technology exposure. Valve engineers have confirmed progress on the software stack, noting that the implementation supports both FreeSync and HDMI Forum VRR displays. Linux 7.4 is anticipated to be released around late 2026.
